LET MODERN EXTERIORS OF SPRINGFIELD
SHOW YOU  OUR REPLACEMENT METHODS

Typically, replacing old windows takes one of three forms: sash replacement, insert replacement (or retrofit), and full-frame replacement. This chart describes the differences between replacement methods and compares the benefits of each.

  NEW COMPONENTS INVOLVED:
Sash replacement Insert replacement Full-frame replacement
SASH: includes the part or parts of the window that move and jamb liners only.  Sash and frame: new window with its own frame is installed window frame. Sash, frame, and trim: old window is entirely removed and replaced within the original rough opening.
  WEATHER TIGHTNESS:
Problematic: old window seldom level, plumb and square. Manufacturer of the new sash rarely warranties total window performance. Eliminates problem: because new window has its own sash with its own weather-strip. Eliminates problem: because new window has its own sash with its own weather-strip.

  EFFECT ON DAYLIGHT OPENING:
  Minimal: minimal reduction in opening.

Moderate: moderate reduction in opening, depending on choice of brand and width of the window frame. Varies: often no reduction in opening; may actually increase daylight opening with some brands.
  WHEN TO CHOOSE  EACH  METHOD:
.
At Andersen we believe the sensible approach to window replacement should always include a frame to ensure weather tightness—as in insert and full-frame replacements.
Sash replacement only is not recommended. Consider insert replacement for a cost-effective solution. Appropriate when existing frame is sound (not rotting), but opening may not be plumb or square.

Necessary if existing unit is decayed, and may be appropriate even when existing unit is sound (not rotting), or window opening is to be enlarged.
